- 11:43Why we're giving AI too much credit | Morten Rand-Hendriksen | TEDxSurreyMorten Rand-Hendriksen explores the profound impact of language on our understanding of technology, particularly AI. Using humor and personal anecdotes, he reveals how AI, devoid of understanding or intent, operates purely through pattern recognition yet feels human-like due to the language we use. He explains how terms like “artificial intelligence” and metaphors such as "thinking" or "learning" distort our perceptions, fueling unnecessary fears about AI surpassing humanity. Morten emphasizes that technology is a choice shaped by how we describe and engage with it. This talk challenges viewers to rethink their assumptions about AI and highlights the power of intentional language to shape a better, more informed future.Morten is a passionate technology educator who believes in empowering people by encouraging a healthy skepticism toward the sanctity of technology. With a focus on artificial intelligence and cutting-edge web technologies, Morten has dedicated the past 15 years to creating online courses that have reached millions of learners worldwide. His knack for breaking down complex technologies and presenting them in relatable ways makes it easier for others to understand and integrate them into their lives. With a degree in philosophy, Morten is genuinely curious about how language influences communication and shapes our understanding of the world.Originally from Norway, Morten has lived in Burnaby, British Columbia, for over twenty years with his wife and son. Guided by his motto, "Hope is a catalyst," his work is deeply rooted in personal experiences and a desire to support others in building futures where they and their communities can thrive. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. - 12:05How Plants Can Help Us Remember Who We Are | Jonn Gale | TEDxLagosSalonWhat if tradition isn't about the past but how we shape the future? In this TEDxLagos Salon 2025, Jonn Gale, artist and researcher, invites us to radically reimagine the archives not as dusty drawers and pressed flowers, but as a living, breathing space that connects generations, communities, and ecosystems. In a world obsessed with classification and control, Gale reminds us that the real archive is relational. And that we need more practice, not just records, because plant knowledge grows out of relationships not data. Jonn Gale is a London-based ethnobotanist using speculative analysis, ethnobotany, and visual ethnography to create relational botanical archives. Her work focuses on nonlinearity, multi-species livability, and botanical objects as historical actors. She's pursuing a practice-led doctorate at Birkbeck and the Linnean Society, funded by AHRC/CHASE, researching Black naturalists' contributions to 18th-19th century natural knowledge. Her research involves studying specimens and manuscripts at the Linnean Society to identify hidden actors and develop a decolonial archival approach.
