The Power of Play: How Fun Fuels a Better World | Jane Schmelkin | TEDxTufts

Play isn’t just for kids – it’s a fundamental part of being human. From childhood games to video games, sports, and hobbies, play boosts productivity, makes us more empathetic, and strengthens social connections. But somewhere along the way, many adults stop playing. Why? What if we reignite the playful spirit to literally change the world? In this talk, Jane Schmelkin explores the science, history, and power of play, revealing how it shapes our brains, fosters connection, and enhances productivity. Drawing from research and experiences in human factors engineering, game design, and everyday life, Jane makes the case for reclaiming play as an essential tool for curiosity, resilience, and happiness. Jane Schmelkin is a current senior at Tufts University studying Engineering Psychology and Computer Science. Jane has worked for the past nine months at Warner Bros. Games Boston as a product manager developing the Game of Thrones: Conquest live mobile game. In her free time she enjoys skiing, hiking, and trying new restaurants. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
