Informal Communities Will Save Humanity | Penélope Gonçalves | TEDxPraça Gil Eanes
Informal Communities Will Save Humanity shares a vision for how everyday individuals can create real impact through small intentional actions, simply by connecting and collaborating in informal communities.
Creating impact isn't reserved for the "chosen few", and humanity's greatest super power lies in our collective ability to act, even when we're full of self-doubt.
Drawing on a personal journey from online isolation to real-world collaboration, the talk highlights the dangers of loneliness, a growing worldwide trend that can only be reverted by genuine connection and creativity. It also challenges the notion that people must be completely selfless to start helping others, and reflects on the importance of ensuring that the communities we build are not toxic environments, but purpose-driven for humanity.
By following simple steps that don't require a lot of time or money, informal communities can become the path to a more hopeful (and healthier) future. Penélope is a community builder with a strong curiosity to find what makes people tick. Wearing different hats (software engineer, team lead, founder, artist), she actively participated in and organized numerous grassroot initiatives, including Geek Sessions Faro, Geek Girls Portugal, Agile Connect, and impactful hackathons like Startup Weekend, Shift and Impact Hackers. Having studied in several cities and worked with multicultural teams, Penélope quickly learned that people are the most interesting when they’re getting their hands dirty to solve problems in a collaborative way. Not one to settle for one thing, she likes to dabble into a bazillion creative hobbies, and by accident has created more than 90 music playlists. - 16:35What if community is built by sharing stories we hide? | Sónia Silva | TEDxPraça Gil EanesWhat if the stories we’ve been taught to repeat are exactly what keep us apart? In this heartfelt talk, communication coach Sónia Silva shows how our most imperfect, personal stories can become the foundation for authentic community, inviting us to belong not by hiding, but by revealing who we truly are. Sónia Silva is a communication coach, trainer, and co-host of Storytelling Lisboa, where a safe space for storytelling is created for. She has worked with companies, entrepreneurs and TEDx speakers, helping them find authenticity in the way they communicate.Sónia has grown up in an environment where social narratives stories shaped how she saw, and was seen by, the world and therefore she believes that imperfect stories are the invisible glue of communitiesm. Le parole diventano così strumenti per la scoperta e la realizzazione Born in Naples in 1996, Vincenzo Comunale began studying acting at the age of thirteen and quickly became one of the youngest and most talented comedians in Italy. In 2025, he was included by Forbes Italia in the list of the 100 Under 30 Italians who are changing the world. - 5:52How Third Culture Kids Hold the Key to Inclusive Leadership | Emilia Lun | TEDxEspoo YouthEmillia Lun was a Youth Speaker at TEDxEspoo Youth 2025!In this TEDx Talk, Emilia Lun reflects on the experience of being a third-culture kid - someone who has grown up with influences from multiple cultures and countries. Her Talk starts with a simple question: “Where are you from?” But Emilia explains how for a third-culture kid, answering that is not so simple. She explains how her own story doesn't fit neatly into one place. She was raised in one country, has parents from another, went to school in a completely different setting, and even put “home” in a fort - metaphorically speaking. The Talk dives into what it feels like to grow up in the “in-between” - where you are expected to know how to manage different languages, customs, and expectations. She shares how it is a struggle to fit in and constantly shift between different cultures. She explains as they grew older, she came to realize that the “in-between” space is not a void - it is a place of connection. Being a third-culture kid means you are a bridge, someone who can understand multiple perspectives and bring people together across differences. Emilia also shares a story from her time at a boarding school in the Swiss Alps, where she saw a new student feeling invisible and unsure of where to sit at lunch. This moment became a reminder to her how third-culture kids are often more aware of these quiet moments, able to notice when others are left out. At the end of Emilia’s Talk she says: “The future of leadership, real leadership, isn't loud. It's listening. It's bridging. And it's belonging. And I believe that the most powerful changemakers don't all just come from one place. They come from between them.”For anyone who has ever felt like they don't quite fit in, this talk is a reminder that being “in-between” is not a weakness - it is a strength. Whether you identify as a third-culture kid or not, this Talk offers a new perspective on connection.#TEDxEspooYouth #TEDxTalk #TEDxEspooYouth2025 Emilia Lun is a high school student, raised between Germany, Italy, the U.S., and Switzerland, she’s learned to navigate identity, language, and belonging from a young age. After spending a life-changing exchange year at Beau Soleil, a Swiss boarding school and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro at 15, Emilia saw that real leadership isn’t about fitting in. It’s about building bridges. In her talk, she shares why growing up between cultures isn’t a gap. It's a gift. - 13:41Restoring coral reefs to save the ocean | Christina Egger | TEDxPraça Gil EanesEurope’s deep seas harbor some of the planet’s most stunning coral ecosystems—cold-water coral gardens that flourish in the dark and chilly depths. But while tropical coral reefs have long been the focus of global conservation, Europe’s corals have remained largely in the shadows. Until now.In this inspiring TEDx Talk, learn how marine scientists are using groundbreaking coral restoration techniques like breeding and seeding baby corals to revive these vital but threatened ecosystems. Adapted from proven tropical reef methods, this work marks a turning point in ocean conservation in Europe.Cold-water corals may be out of sight, but they’re no longer out of mind. Discover why protecting them matters for biodiversity, for climate resilience, and for the future of our oceans. Christina Egger is a marine scientist passionate about protecting the ocean’s most overlooked ecosystems. She earned her PhD at the Centre of Marine Sciences in Portugal, where she focused on developing pioneering methods to reproduce and grow threatened native coral species. Her research laid the foundation for restoring Europe’s cold-water coral gardens, biodiversity hotspots hidden beneath the surface. Now, Christina is working to take these efforts further, scaling up coral restoration techniques and bringing them into real-world conservation initiatives. Her mission: to help Europe’s forgotten reefs recover and thrive in the face of growing environmental threats.
