The vital role of lobster fishers in building climate resilience | Ashley Eugley | TEDxBard College

Want to build climate resilience? Talk to a lobster fisher. Having grown up on a lobster wharf in coastal Maine, Ashley Eugley has a unique perspective on how natural resource dependent communities can contribute to our shared understanding of climate change. In this TEDx talk, Ashley highlights the importance of bridging the gap between conventional science and the level where life is lived to cultivate climate resilience. Ashley Eugley is a proponent of uniting science, policy, and collaboration to build climate resilience. Originally from a close-knit fishing community in coastal Maine, Ashley earned a BA in Environmental and Urban Studies from Bard College in 2022. In 2022, Ashley was awarded a Watson Fellowship for her project “Community Science as Community Agency” wherein she spent a year solo-traveling across five continents to explore how community-based science may be leveraged to monitor the impacts of climate change, combat environmental injustice, and enhance community resilience. After returning to the United States, she supported mid-coast Maine communities with devising climate adaptation and resilience strategies. Ashley is currently a graduate student in Environmental Management at the Yale School of the Environment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
