Does space belong to everyone? | Mikko Puumala | TEDxUNINA Federico II

Space belongs to everyone — or does it? Philosopher Mikko Puumala explores the promises and perils of the Outer Space Treaty, showing how the romance of shared ownership could turn into tragedy without proper rules. From space debris to asteroid mining, he argues that our generation has a golden window of opportunity to set fair, sustainable principles for humanity’s future in space. Mikko Puumala is a postdoc researcher in University of Turku, Finland. Mikko’s research interests include environmental ethics, space ethics, and philosophy of sustainability. In space ethics, his focus is mainly on ethical and political issues pertaining to space settlements, environmental protection in outer space, and property rights. Mikko is broadly interested in how extreme scenarios, high risks, and complex problems affect our systems of ethics and moral beliefs and what kind of challenges they pose for moral theorizing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
