How to Preserve Tradition with Cuteness | Daud Nugraha | TEDxBandung

Is there room for shadow puppets among the younger generation, in the midst of modern pop culture? Daud is an illustrator, educator, and the creator “aniwayang”—an innovative combination of animation and shadow puppets, which resurrects local Indonesian folklore through adorable characters Cila, Cili, and Cilo. Inspired by his childhood immersed in shadow puppets performance, along with his professional experience in the world of children and animation, Daud created a new medium that bridges cultural heritage with the imagination of the younger generation.Through the “Desa Timun” folklore, he revives the shadow puppets tradition with a closer approach to children: relatable stories, unforgettable characters, and adorable visuals. From local stages to 12 countries, aniwayang serves as a bridge between tradition and the future. He believes that preserving culture does not always have to be rigid—sometimes, a little touch of adorable visuals can nurture a new fondness for ancestral heritage.
