Humus - the basis of life | Franz Rösl | TEDxOTHRegensburg
Why is "soil" left over from our bodies when we die? Why is the health of all life dependent on the health of our soil? Let us take you on a journey, exciting and simple at the same time. Learn more about humus, the "living" part of the soil, and its direct influence on us humans and on all life.Only the thin living layer of our earth, the humus-containing soil, provides us with 95% of our food. Scientists can use human blood to trace which field the food we ate before came from. This makes it easier to understand the connection between soil health and our health. A deep look into the humus shows how complex and diverse soil is and why we can understand it better if we see it as a living organism. Many microorganisms, of which only 2% are known according to current detection methods, live in symbiosis with the roots of plants and maintain a healthy soil structure. These symbioses are disrupted by soil compaction, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in particular. The soil structure recedes and humus is broken down. The soil clumps together and can absorb less and less water. As a direct effect, we are experiencing reduced groundwater recharge, increasing pollutants in the groundwater, increasing flooding, reduced crop yields and a sharp decline in the content of valuable ingredients in food. When we understand the central role that healthy soil plays in our lives and how it is being damaged by humans on a large scale, we realize how important it is to preserve humus and promote its development. This is our responsibility. Every individual can contribute to the health of the soil. Healthy, living and humus-rich soils store and filter our water and produce our food. We need healthy water and healthy soil for our health. Life only comes from life - and healthy soil is the basis for this. Franz Rösl has been Managing Director of the Rösl Group in the second generation since 2022. The graduate civil engineer is responsible for over 122 employees at three locations. Earthworks, demolition, transportation, waste disposal and recycling as well as stone and earth form the service portfolio of the company group. Franz Rösl has managed the Liemehna compost and soil plant for over 25 years and still conducts research into composts. He is intensively involved with humus qualities and the effect of natural substances on health processes. His vocation is to promote healthy soil as the basis for the health of water, plants, animals and people. Until today he works with numerous organizations, scientists and practitioners. As a speaker on the subject of soil health for over 20 years and as the founder and chairman of the „Interessengemeinschaft gesunder Boden e. V.“, Franz Rösl was awarded the 1st Environmental Prize of the City of Regensburg for the „IG gesunder Boden“ in 2018. - 14:48AI and the Hidden Price of Comfort | Nik Popgeorgiev | TEDxFolsomWhat if technology gave us everything we wanted—yet left us with nothing to live for? This talk explores the hidden cost of AI-driven automation: the quiet erosion of purpose, meaning, and struggle. Blending science, philosophy, and real-world stories, it reveals why comfort without effort may be humanity’s most dangerous trap. Nik Popgeorgiev is a network engineer, college educator, and writer who explores the quiet tension between technological progress and human meaning. His fascination with artificial intelligence runs alongside a deeper question: how do we preserve purpose, creativity, and selfhood in a world increasingly run by machines? With over two decades in the tech industry, Nik brings both technical expertise and reflective insight to his work. In the winter, he works as a ski instructor in the Sierra, where movement, focus, and nature offer a different kind of clarity.
