Humus - the basis of life | Franz Rösl | TEDxOTHRegensburg
Why is "soil" left over from our bodies when we die? Why is the health of all life dependent on the health of our soil? Let us take you on a journey, exciting and simple at the same time. Learn more about humus, the "living" part of the soil, and its direct influence on us humans and on all life.Only the thin living layer of our earth, the humus-containing soil, provides us with 95% of our food. Scientists can use human blood to trace which field the food we ate before came from. This makes it easier to understand the connection between soil health and our health. A deep look into the humus shows how complex and diverse soil is and why we can understand it better if we see it as a living organism. Many microorganisms, of which only 2% are known according to current detection methods, live in symbiosis with the roots of plants and maintain a healthy soil structure. These symbioses are disrupted by soil compaction, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in particular. The soil structure recedes and humus is broken down. The soil clumps together and can absorb less and less water. As a direct effect, we are experiencing reduced groundwater recharge, increasing pollutants in the groundwater, increasing flooding, reduced crop yields and a sharp decline in the content of valuable ingredients in food. When we understand the central role that healthy soil plays in our lives and how it is being damaged by humans on a large scale, we realize how important it is to preserve humus and promote its development. This is our responsibility. Every individual can contribute to the health of the soil. Healthy, living and humus-rich soils store and filter our water and produce our food. We need healthy water and healthy soil for our health. Life only comes from life - and healthy soil is the basis for this. Franz Rösl has been Managing Director of the Rösl Group in the second generation since 2022. The graduate civil engineer is responsible for over 122 employees at three locations. Franz Rösl has managed the Liemehna compost and soil plant for over 25 years and still conducts research into composts. He is intensively involved with humus qualities and the effect of natural substances on health processes. His vocation is to promote healthy soil as the basis for the health of water, plants, animals and people. Until today he works with numerous organizations, scientists and practitioners. As a speaker on the subject of soil health for over 20 years and as the founder and chairman of the „Interessengemeinschaft gesunder Boden e. - 4:58Reimagining Infrastructure of Care | Dr Rishab & Dr Samiksha Arora | TEDxBasant NagarWhen we speak of big cities, we highlight skyscrapers and metro lines. But in smaller cities like Amritsar, progress is often narrated only through cultural history—never the future. In this inspiring talk, Dr. Rishabh Arora and Dr. Samiksha Arora, Directors of EMC Hospitals, Amritsar, challenge that imbalance. They argue that true development is not just about bridges and flyovers but also about building invisible infrastructure—the infrastructure of care. They introduce the idea of a Women’s Body Index (WBI) as a new way of measuring progress—through maternal health, menstrual dignity, postpartum recovery, mental well-being, and preventive screenings. Drawing from their experience of designing a hospital as a prototype for a city of care, they show how multidisciplinary, empathetic healthcare can transform families, workplaces, and cities.Their vision is bold yet deeply human: a future where no woman travels miles for safe childbirth, no mother hides postpartum depression, and no girl misses school for lack of menstrual care. Because when women thrive, entire ecosystems thrive. This talk reimagines Amritsar—and every city—not just as a space of history, but as a city of sanctuary and healing for women, families, and generations to come. Today, we are honored to introduce Dr. Rishab Arora and Dr. Samiksha Arora, visionary leaders reimagining healthcare in Amritsar with innovation, empathy, and excellence. Dr. Rishab, a first-generation doctor with an MBBS from MM Medical College and FCCS certification from the USA, combines clinical expertise with compassionate leadership. Under his guidance, EMC Group of Hospitals has expanded access to world-class, patient-focused care. Dr. Samiksha, a dynamic young director, has contributed to India’s national AI initiatives and now drives EMC’s technological transformation, ensuring care that is precise, personalized, and deeply human. Together, they have built more than hospitals—they have created systems that heal with trust, respect, and integrity. Their vision bridges advanced medical science with heartfelt service, reminding us that true healthcare innovation is about people, not just machines. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Rishab and Dr. Samiksha Arora. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
