One reason the American Dream eludes immigrant children | Baldomero Chavez | TEDxUNCCharlotte

NOTE: Research around the effects of language brokering on youth well-being remains highly variable and an ongoing field of study. For more context, see the footnotes listed below.First generation immigrant children can experience untold stress when they are expected to be the language broker, retirement planner, and next leader for their family. Baldomero 'Baldy' Chavez explores the experiences of first generation immigrant children and the barriers that can exist for immigrant families. By embracing the diversity that immigrant families bring and expanding community centers, Baldy believes we can help immigrant children achieve the American Dream.1:51: Clarification: A 2014 study found that while positive feelings towards language brokering did not predict adverse outcomes, negative feelings towards language brokering could have an indirect effect on behavior.
