Using Technology to Replace Fear with Understanding | Kelsey Simpson | TEDxMacatawa

After receiving racist messages in eighth grade, 17-year-old student leader Kelsey Simpson examines how technology amplifies both hate and hope—from AI-generated deepfakes and post-election racist texts to Black influencers reshaping representation online. She challenges us to transform social media from an echo chamber of fear into a classroom for connection, spotlighting creators like Cheesy Duru, Wisdom K, and Tabitha Brown who are teaching the world about Black identity through joy, creativity, and authentic storytelling. Kelsey Simpson is a dedicated student and volleyball athlete at West Ottawa High School. She is also a key member of I AM Academy, where she collaborates with other young leaders to drive positive change and build community among Black and multiracial youth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
