From Photosynthesis to Bioluminescence | Spyros Gkelis | TEDxPanteionUniversity

The talk will focus on the fascinating phenomenon of bioluminescence. It will explore the biological mechanisms behind it, the purposes it serves in nature, and the organisms that possess it. At the same time, the metaphorical symbolism of bioluminescence will be highlighted, as a source of inspiration for humans, emphasizing the power of inner light and resilience. Spyros Gkelis is an Associate Professor of Bioinformatics and Plant Organism Biodiversity at the Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He studied Biology and earned his PhD on the ecotoxicology and biodiversity of cyanobacteria. His research focuses on the diversity, molecular phylogeny, genomics, and metabolomics of photosynthetic microorganisms. He teaches in undergraduate and postgraduate programs and has authored more than 55 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and over 200 publications in total.
