- 15:20Saving Children - Gadchiroli to Global | Dr. Anand Bang | TEDxIIHMR UIn a world where modern medicine often fails to reach those who need it most, the story of Gadchiroli stands out as proof that innovation doesn’t always come from high-tech labs or big hospitals, sometimes, it begins in the most remote villages. Dr. Anand Bang carries forward a legacy shaped by Gandhiji’s call: “Go where the problems are, not where you are the problem.”His grandparents and parents chose to leave comfort and prestige behind to serve rural India. In Gadchiroli, a district of forests, bullock carts, and scattered villages, they discovered infant mortality as high as 121 per 1,000 births. With almost no doctors, no hospitals, and no modern healthcare, they asked two simple but profound questions: How many children die? Why do they die? The answers led to a quiet revolution. What began in 86 villages became national policy, influencing the work of 800,000 ASHAs in India and scaling to over 80 countries. Dr. Bang’s message is clear: when local communities, local action, and rigorous science come together, the impact can be global. Research, he reminds us, is the lever that can move the earth, shaping health policies in Delhi, Geneva, or Washington, D.C. His talk is anchored in Gandhiji’s timeless wisdom: “When faced with a dilemma, remember the most wretched and vulnerable human being you ever saw. Dr. Anand Bang, physician and public health leader, carries forward the legacy of his parents, Dr. Abhay and Rani Bang, founders of SEARCH in Gadchiroli. As Joint Director at SEARCH and Advisor to Tata Trusts, he connects grassroots innovation with national health policy, ensuring rural realities shape India’s healthcare agenda. His work spans maternal and child health, where he has championed low-cost, community-driven interventions, and comprehensive primary healthcare, bringing essential services to remote villages. Guided by the belief that health is justice, not charity, he empowers health workers, women’s groups, and communities to take charge of their well-being. A mentor to young professionals, Dr. Bang ensures evidence-based solutions move beyond research to transform healthcare delivery across rural India.
