- 10:52It's Time to Take the "Fun" Out of Funeral | Lance Cox | TEDxSpokaneAs a funeral director over the past twenty years, Lance Cox has observed a dramatic shift in American mourning practices, from somber traditional ceremonies to increasingly casual celebrations of life. While this evolution reflects changing cultural attitudes, Cox highlights that our rush to lighten the mood of death may be robbing us of essential grieving experiences. Drawing from centuries-old customs and contemporary experiences, he reveals how traditional mourning rituals served vital emotional and social purposes, offering a compelling vision for how we can blend time-honored practices with modern sensibilities to create more meaningful and healing approaches to death and loss. Lance has been in the death care industry for over 20 years and is a licensed funeral director, licensed embalmer, crematory operator, certified funeral celebrant, and holds a degree in Mortuary Science. He owns funeral businesses in Idaho, Washington, and Nevada. In the last two decades, he has witnessed a transformation in the way Americans mourn. He has been an involved member of the Barbershop Harmony Society since his youth and has served as music director for two community choruses and performed in several quartets. - 14:50What's wrong with kids these days? Start with a better question | Jim Harris | TEDxMarshallUHave you ever asked yourself “What’s wrong with kids these days?” Jim Harris suggests this is entirely the wrong question. Instead, he proposes that we should be asking “What do kids need?” The first question invokes a head-to-head interaction, suggesting a sense of hierarchy or authority, whereas the second is hip-to-hip, promoting guidance and empathy through walking side-by-side. Dr. Jim Harris serves as an Assistant Professor and Director of Behavioral Health in the Department of Social Work at Marshall University. He is also the owner of Opportunities Consulting Services. He has had several roles in health and human services as an early interventionist, parent educator, educational consultant, university instructor, and behavioral health therapist. Dr. Harris has presented at various conferences from the local to the international level on behavioral intervention, parenting, positive behavior support, trauma-informed practices, organizational change, and more. He has also worked with multiple public and private entities, including the Fred Rogers Company, the United States Department of Education, and the United States Department of Justice. Dr. Harris uses his practice approach to complex topics to help people better understand themselves and the people they support in their lives.
