- 11:03Why there is no perfect college applicant formula | Aishani Singh | TEDxWestern Canada HSThrough Aishani’s own experiences and countless conversations with peers, she realized the ‘formula’ she had been following to be the perfect college applicant wasn’t unique; many other students like her were attempting to fit themselves into the mold. This inspired her to break free of the formula and take a bold stance against it. Now committed only to her true passions, Aishani speaks openly about a different approach in her TEDx Talk: one that embraces individuality, passions, and a more balanced path to growth and fulfilment. Aishani Singh is a grade 10 student at Westmount Charter School with a love for learning. She lives with her parents and younger brother, whom she loves to spend time with after school. Her hobbies and interests include reading and writing, playing guitar, public speaking, and spending time with family and friends. Through it all, Aishani embraces her future as she’s figuring it out with curiosity, discipline, and an open mind—eager to learn more, create more, and share more with the world, one idea at a time. - 11:59Lessons we can learn from storytelling | Sania Grewal | TEDxWestern Canada HSThe idea for Sania’s talk first took root a long time ago, through volunteering at her local library. As someone who has loved reading since she was a small child, Sania has always believed that storytelling has the power to change the world. Now, as a high school student navigating a world of declining youth literacy rates and growing social disconnection, she feels more strongly than ever that stories hold solutions to many of today’s challenges. In her talk, Sania integrates her own experience with discussions of history, literature, and neuroscience—ultimately exploring how storytelling can help us build empathy and solve problems in the modern world. Sania is a 11th Grade student at Westmount Charter School. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. - 9:48Overthinking: The Illusion of Control | Amy Cheng | TEDxWestern Canada HSAmy’s talk reflects her experiences overthinking things and is largely inspired by her best friend who is the far more simplistic thinker. It is easy to notice the anxiety that can linger in many situations even when it is highly detrimental. As time goes on, it feels as though every problem gets larger and as more fears engulf the mind, it is important to remind yourself of the hidden power of simplicity. While the world constantly views overthinking and simplicity as a black and white situation, it is important to consider the complex dynamics of every situation. It is very easy to get caught up in the complexity of every situation and trap yourself in a vicious cycle. Amy is determined to provide ways to help the issue while also navigating the complexities of doing so. My name is Amy Cheng and I am a grade 10 student at Western Canada High School. I enjoy art, science and music in my free time. I also have a lovely cat I wish all of you could see. I have always wanted to spread my thoughts to others and hopefully inspire others. I can sometimes be a nervous person and I hope being able to speak to others about my thoughts can help others along with myself overcome this challenge.
