Ποιες είναι οι όψεις του σύμπαντος; Πόσο εύκολο είναι να κατανοήσουμε αυτό το οποίο δεν μπορούμε να αγγίξουμε; Ο Δρ. Βασίλης Χαρμανδάρης μας μιλάει για την προσπάθεια του ανθρώπου να κατανοήσει τον ουράνιο θόλο, χρησιμοποιώντας την πρώτη πειραματική επιστήμη των φυσικών επιστημών: την Αστρονομία. Ο Βασίλης Χαρμανδάρης είναι Καθηγητής Αστροφυσικής στο Τμήμα Φυσικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης, Πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και Διευθυντής της Κεντρικής Διεύθυνσης του Ιδρύματος Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας.
Έχει σπουδάσει και εργαστεί σε Πανεπιστήμια και Ερευνητικά Κέντρα των ΗΠΑ και της Γαλλίας και το επιστημονικό του έργο επικεντρώνεται στην κατανόηση του μηχανισμού παραγωγής ενέργειας σε πυρήνες γαλαξιών στο κοντινό και μακρινό σύμπαν, χρησιμοποιώντας κυρίως παρατηρήσεις από διαστημικά τηλεσκόπια.
Έχει διατελέσει Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Αστρονομικής Εταιρείας, καθώς και μέλος πολλών διεθνών επιστημονικών επιτροπών.
Τελευταίο αλλά εξίσου σημαντικό είναι το γεγονός ότι του έχουν απονεμηθεί το βραβείο κοινωνικής προσφοράς από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης για το έτος 2023 και ο τίτλος του ιππότη του Τάγματος των Ακαδημαϊκών Φοινίκων από τη Γαλλική Δημοκρατία το 2024.
