The E-Bike Effect: How AI Can Make You Smarter And Lazier | Barend Last | TEDxROC Nijmegen

In this talk, Barend Last explores how artificial intelligence, like an e-bike for the mind, can both empower and weaken our cognitive muscles.Drawing on education, psychology, and personal stories, he argues that AI doesn’t make us dumber—dumb choices do. The key lies in consciously deciding when to offload thinking and when to embrace productive struggle. Barend Last is a Dutch educator, author, and speaker who translates science and innovation into compelling stories. He began his career as an elementary school teacher and later moved into educational design, consulting, and speaking on topics such as AI, blended learning, self-regulated learning, and technology in education. He still teaches one day per week. He is author of books for both children and professionals (including on AI, instructional design and blended learning) and leads his own educational bureau, Buro Mindshift. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
