8:14Can AI change how we think about the climate? | Florian Michahelles | TEDxTUWienWhy do we struggle to think beyond tomorrow? In this talk, Florian Michahelles explores the science behind our short-term instincts — and how technology can help us overcome them. From AI-generated “future self” messages to immersive virtual experiences that make climate impact personal, Florian shows how we can rewire our minds using AI and VR to imagine — and act for — a sustainable future. Drawing on research with AI-driven future-thinking tools, he reveals how visualizing personal futures can motivate real behavioral change. This talk invites us to see long-term thinking not as an abstract ideal, but as a skill we can support by technology. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” — Warren Buffett Watch, reflect, and ask yourself: What choice will your future self thank you for? Video produced by Apehouse (www.apehouse.at). Florian Michahelles is a full professor for ubiquitous computing at TU Wien. He investigates how we can apply technology to support humans in their tasks and activities while keeping the human user in control. How can we wrap computing capabilities into proactive services, how can we leverage AI to free users from routine and mundane tasks, and let them focus on what we humans are best at: creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and social collaboration. 9:30Why comfort costs you more than you think | Alexandros V. E. Ioannou-Naoum | TEDxTUWienFor thousands of years, people around the world have built in direct exchange with their environment — shaping comfort through orientation, mass, material, light, and air. These have not been stylistic choices but survival strategies, refined over centuries of using and adapting to climate rather than fighting it. Today, many buildings no longer stand in the climate they were originally designed for — a phenomenon of climate reclassification that deepens the widening gap between architecture and its climatic environment. Architecture Follows Climate explores how the climate-responsive intelligence and design strategies of vernacular buildings can inspire new forms of modern design and construction. By integrating this knowledge with renewable technologies and circular thinking, Alexandros V. E. Ioannou-Naoum invites us to see how architects may transform buildings from energy consumers into resilient, energy-autonomous, and truly sustainable structures for the future. Architecture must once again follow climate — and with it, life itself. Anything else has proven to be a design error. Video produced by Apehouse (www.apehouse.at). Alexandros V. E. Ioannou-Naoum is a researcher and teacher at TU Wien’s Institute of Building and Industrial Construction, operating at the interface of architecture and civil engineering. His work explores how buildings can drastically reduce energy demand through integrated and passive energy-design methods, renewable energy systems, and principles of the circular economy. In this context, he develops scenario-based frameworks that link building datasets, material performance and lifespans as well as thermal and energy-performance analyses to map pathways to transform existing building stock and to enable its adaptation to a changing global climate. He is the author of Architecture Follows Climate (Birkhäuser 2024, https://birkhauser.com/en/book/9783035627817), which reveals how centuries of climate-adaptive architectural intelligence can be reinterpreted to reshape the next generation of resilient, energy-autonomous, and resource-efficient buildings. 11:03Learning on My Own Terms | Thomas Curto | TEDxGiarreHow does a professional ballet dancer become a mathematical engineer without ever stepping foot in a traditional classroom? Thomas Curto shares his unconventional journey of homeschooling, debunking myths along the way. He reveals that the true advantage wasn't just "freedom," but the time to explore his identity before being graded. A compelling reflection on why the true goal of education shouldn't be following a map, but learning how to navigate when the map runs out. Visit our website: https://www.tedxgiarre.com/ - Follow us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tedxgiarre/ Thomas Curto is a 21-year-old Mathematical Engineering student at Politecnico di Milano and a lifelong homeschooler working at the intersection of education, systems thinking, and social impact. Raised outside traditional schooling, he developed a deep belief in the freedom to choose one’s educational path — a right not equally accessible in every country. Through EDUlearn Academy, he has helped support over 10,000 families across Italy navigating homeschooling and alternative education. He also leads international study trips in which learning becomes a lived experience, fostering leadership, accountability, and real-world decision-making. Thomas brings an engineering mindset to education reform — and when he’s not thinking about systems change, he’s playing chess or dancing, still curious about how strategy and creativity move together.
