A comunicação é multidimensional: envolve fatores intrapessoais, interpessoais e histórico-sociais. Ao colocar os holofotes apenas nos aspectos técnicos, muitas vezes esquecemos que é o contexto que dá sentido às palavras e influencia como comunicamos e nos relacionamos — podendo aproximar ou distanciar. Para Vívian, não existe essência da comunicação sem contexto — porque comunicar é, em última instância, dar visibilidade a diversos fatores e fenômenos, e reduzir o olhar apenas à mensagem ou ao emissor é insuficiente diante da complexidade da comunicação.
