New stories for longer lives | Dr. Joseph F. Coughlin | TEDxAthens Salon
Longevity is rewriting every chapter of the human story, yet we’re still living by an old script. It’s time to lay the infrastructure of a new longevity society—with stories that inspire and guide us, systems of education, work, and markets that adapt to longer lives, and physical spaces and places that engage and connect us at every age. Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD, is the founding director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. A researcher, teacher, and advisor, his work explores how global demographics, technology, and evolving social trends are transforming business and society. Dr. Coughlin teaches in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies & Planning and frequently speaks to Fortune 500 boardrooms as well as to convention halls around the world, delivering his unique style of insight and humor.
Dr. Coughlin advises major companies across various industries on a diverse range of topics shaped by demographic and socio-technical change. He has served on advisory committees for British Telecom, Daimler, Fidelity Investments, and Sanofi-Aventis, as well as for the White House, the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development, and the World Economic Forum.
The Wall Street Journal recognized Dr. Coughlin as a pioneer in reimagining the future of retirement, and Fast Company Magazine named him one of the “100 Most Creative in Business.” He is also a member of World Minds, a Zurich-based community of global leaders in science, arts, and business. - 6:35Fear is Not the Enemy - It's a Friend You Haven't Understood | Zhuoer Li | TEDxNSFZ YouthA year ago, even raising her hand felt impossible. But instead of running from fear, Li Zhuor decided to work with it. From musicals to mock trials to student leadership, she discovered that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s learning to dance with it. In this talk, she reveals how turning “scary” into “a friend” transformed not just her confidence, but her life. I’m Vivian Li, a Chinese G11 student at High School Affiliated To Nanjing Normal University. I used to be the kid who’d hide herself in textbooks to avoid attention. However, after entering high school, I surprised myself. I stepped onto the stage for the first time to perform a segment from the musical Six at the English Festival. Later, I acted in the play Thunderstorm for the charity show. I survived the intense IMT10 and IMT12 mock trial competitions. I even ran for financial representative in the student union—something the younger me would never have dreamed of. It turns out that courage isn’t about fearlessness. It’s about the determination to walk out of the comfort zone despite fear, and that’s how I keep becoming a better version of myself. - 8:47When the Whole World Says “Don’t Take This Path” | Yanning Shi | TEDxNSFZ YouthWith the sensitivity of an observer and the courage of an innovator, Shi Yanning reflects on how we make life choices. She believes that the way out of life’s dilemmas isn’t to follow a fixed path, but to dare to create new rules. In this talk, she explores what it means to redefine your journey on your own terms. I'm Shiny – a name that speaks of light. As an INFP navigating the whirlwind of 11th-grade humanities, I experience the world through deep feeling, high sensitivity, and intuition. While it sometimes means moving through a loud world with an extra-thin skin, it also allows me to perceive glimmers others might miss. Like many of you, I've wrestled with uncertainty, especially at crossroads like choosing between arts and sciences. The fear of taking a "wrong path" nearly dimmed my own light. But I've learned that our radiance isn't defined by the path that illuminates us, but by the authentic glow we choose to carry forward. My journey has taught me that the most vibrant stories are written not by perfect choices, but by the resilience and heart we pour into each step, especially when the ground feels shaky.
