How Poetry is My Weapon | Malaya Ulan | TEDxPenn
Malaya Ulan, the Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, explains how writing has helped her navigate growing up as a first-generation Filipino-American. She shares her belief that poetry can be a powerful tool for healing, both for oneself and for others. Malaya Ulan (Freedom Rain) is a sixteen-year-old Filipino-American Philadelphia based artivist. Ulan currently serves as the 2024-2025 Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia. Malaya Ulan is a multidimensional poet who merges her poetry with dance, film, and visual art. Ulan recently spoke at the United Nations Fourth Review Conference on the Program of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons with IANSA. She has performed at the Barnes Foundation, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Asian Arts Initiative, Painted Bride, Movement Research at Judson Dance Theatre, Festive Walk Philippines and more. She collaborates with her mother in a collective, AniMalayaWorks. Ulan was awarded the Scholastic Art and Writing gold key for the Philadelphia region in 2023 and first place in the open category for the Youth Film Awards at WHYY for her poetic film Anthem Erased. Her poetry accompanied by paintings has been exhibited at Da Vinci Art Alliance Exhibit and Imperfect Gallery. Sou engenheira por formação, pós-graduada em finanças comportamentais pela PUCRS e especializada em planejamento comportamental pelo NeuroEconomia. Através da organização financeira já realizei inúmeros sonhos, como chegar nos 100 mil reais investidos, comprar um carro no PIX, morar à beira mar e levar minha família para viajar para o nordeste. Sonhos que não foram realizados ter uma infinidade de dinheiro entrando no meu bolso, mas sim por uma ter uma boa gestão financeira. Já liderei mais de 400 pessoas na minha mentoria e atualmente eu também apresento um quadro de TV chamado Minuto Finanças no jornal VIP Social. It’s not often that you find an athlete, engineer, musician, and a former Miss America all in one. Grace Stanke breaks misconceptions surrounding nuclear energy through social media, public engagements, and educational workshops. During her year as Miss America 2023, Grace was named the “New Face of Nuclear Energy” by the Wall Street Journal and was on the Forbes 30 under 30 list for Energy. While completing approximately 270,000 miles of travel, she finished her undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since passing on the title of Miss America, Grace continues to travel to advocate for peaceful purposes of the science of the atom. Encouraging worldwide change for clean, zero-carbon emission energy sources, Stanke emphasizes the benefits of nuclear power and seeks to dispel the myths around nuclear energy while inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
