Thinking time with trees | Christina Fredengren | TEDxStockholm University
In the early 1800s, an entire forest of oak trees was planted in Sweden for a single purpose: to build the warships of the future. But by the time the trees were ready for harvest in 1975, the world had changed. The Navy no longer built ships from wood. The carefully planned future had never arrived. This wondrous forest holds a profound secret for our time. We live our lives assuming time is a straight line, that the future will be a predictable extension of the present. But in an age of what Margaret Atwood calls not just "climate change" but "everything change," this simple view is failing us. This talk invites you on a journey to learn how to "think time with trees". It's a call to abandon the ticking clock and embrace a deeper understanding of time—one that is interconnected, relational, and stretches across human and non-human generations. Learn how to think time with trees and find a new way to care for our shared future. Christina is Professor of Archaeology at Stockholm and Uppsala Universities. She is known for her research on archaeology, heritage studies, curatorship, gender theory and the environmental humanities. She explores meeting points between nature and culture, crannogs, post humanist feminism, deep time ethics, as well as intragenerational justice and care. - 12:44What Is the Meaning of Identity When You’re Always the Minority? | Lahib Jaddo | TEDxTexas TechWhat does identity mean when you’ve never belonged to the majority? Born in Iraq to a Turkmen family, Lahib grew up navigating life as a minority — in Iraq, in Lebanon, and later in the United States. In this talk, she shares her journey across cultures and borders, reflecting on how identity is shaped, questioned, and ultimately redefined when you’re always the outsider. Lahib Jaddo is an Iraqi-born artist, architect, and educator whose work spans painting, sculpture, and storytelling. Born in Baghdad to a Turkmen family, she spent her formative years in Iraq and Lebanon before immigrating to the U.S., where she earned a Master of Architecture and a Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. Jaddo's art explores themes of memory, displacement, and cultural identity, blending her Middle Eastern heritage with her deep connection to the American landscape. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and is the subject of the award-winning documentary Jaddoland.
