- 5:04For Grandma: My Dream to Heal | Mia Zhou | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghaiWhen Mia was four, her grandma got sick and flew to the stars. She asked her mum, “Why do we get sick? Is it because our cells forget to do their homework?” Mia had many questions every day. She would draw hospitals with rainbows and pretend to be a doctor, giving treatment to her teddy bears. Now she is nine, and she reads non-fiction books about human bodies, DNA, and genes. She studies her teddy bear’s bones. Maybe one day, when she fixes enough teddy bears, her grandmother will come back. Maybe one day, when she becomes a doctor, she will save more lives. Mia a primary-aged girl studying in Beijing, China. She loves to paint pictures and make crafts. Her brush and hands are like magic tools, creating wonderful things. Mia enjoys reading non-fiction books and learning new things about the world. - 5:04Not Chinese Enough,Not American Enough,Change is Belonging | Victoria Zhang | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghaiChange is one of the main things all of us have to deal with. Especially during moments of change, it is difficult, so we all tend to avoid it. However, no matter how big or small, it is essential that we face these changes bravely. Change, whether influenced by our parents or a decision we make to try something new, will shape our experiences and ideas. These changes help us see more of the wider world and are a core part of our identities. In her speech, the speaker shares her experience of moving from America to Shanghai. Through her story, she hopes you will see “change” in a new way. Victoria is a middle school student in Shanghai, China. She has been caught between two worlds: never fully “Chinese” in Shanghai, never fully “American” in Texas. After struggling with Chinese language classes recently, Victoria discovered true belonging comes from embracing change, not resisting it. Through this journey, she found there is still something that connects her with both China and the US - swimming! Back in the US, she loved swimming; it was one of her most favoured hobbies. After moving to China, she felt disoriented, like something from her life was missing. But recently, after starting swimming again, she found herself gaining a sense of confidence, and once again, she felt like she was home again. - 3:36Why Pets Matter | Zoe Qureshi | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghaiPeople assume pets are just fun and cute, but having a pet offers many benefits. Pets matter. They help us learn about concepts such as consequences, responsibility, patience, and empathy. They also help reduce stress and loneliness while improving our mental and physical health. Pets help us as much as we help them, and it is about time that we recognise this. Zoe is a 10-year-old student, originally from Pakistan. She has lived in Shanghai for more than 7 years and really enjoy sports, specifically swimming and badminton. Zoe also love animals; she loves playing with them, learning about them and helping them, especially stray animals. For this reason, she cannot understand when people ignore the importance of animals in our lives or are cruel to them. It got her thinking - why not talk about it at TEDx. Zoe truly believe that no matter what they do … or don't, pets matter, and we won’t be the same without them.
