Psoriasis: Beyond the Skin into the Soul | Ritika Jayaprakash | TEDxHeritage HS Youth

This TEDx talk addresses the systemic barriers surrounding the skin condition known as psoriasis. It is often misunderstood as contagious, and those who have psoriasis experience significant amounts of physical and psychological trauma. This TEDx talk aims to clarify misconceptions about the condition while also drawing attention to it and its effects on the lives of those it affects. Psoriasis is often not entirely curable, and addressing it will push healthcare and research initiatives to provide affordable and effective treatments for this condition. Ritika is a junior at Frisco Heritage High School. She became a TEDx speaker to spread awareness and become more vocal about the struggles she perceives in her family and society. The topic of her speech is facing psoriasis and the actions to take that could help those living with this condition. She aims to bring attention to this to prevent misconceptions and illustrate the reality of psoriasis especially since members of her family have been diagnosed with the condition. From this, Ritika has learned what true resilience looks like and hopes to further the cause of bringing accessible treatment options to individuals affected by psoriasis. In her own life she is passionate about medicine and healthcare with her mother being one of her biggest inspirations. After high school, Ritika plans to finish her undergrad as a pre-med and go to med school to become a cardiothoracic surgeon while also pursuing journalism. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
