I will be discussing the rise of traditional patriarchal views and values in young women in the media. I think this topic is not only very relevant but also important for the women and girls in the audience during my talk. Hi, hello! I am a 14-year-old student at the Second High School in Szczecin, currently going through the 4 MYP. Outside of school, I am an art enthusiast, indulging in dance, music, and the performative arts in general.
Public performances and speeches are very much my area of expertise, thanks to my experience at various MUN conferences and multiple debates as a climate activist in my city. For my whole life, I’ve known my true calling was talking people’s ears off, which is why I am so happy that this event is giving me the platform to talk about a topic very dear to me. Comics are often presumed as not academic or critical enough to be a valid source of literary study, and if they are to be taken seriously only a certain kind of tragic, memoir style are considered worth analyzing. By arguing that ‘bad art’, ‘ugly comics’, or ‘juvenile fiction’ are necessary fragments of history to navigate the quickly developing world around us, MJ Chiao advocates for the comics form as a radical form of activism and social remembering. Ugly comics becomes survival. MJ Chiao is a fourth year English Literature student who is passionate about comics and graphic forms. With a love for teaching and writing, MJ wishes to challenge the status quo of English studies and academia to encompass the new medias and technologies of our everyday.
