Why Planet Earth Is Alive | Ferris Jabr | TEDxNewEngland

Contrary to conventional wisdom, life does not simply reside on our planet. Life is a physical extension of Earth that has profoundly influenced the planet over billions of years. Together, life and the broader planetary environment create a single, highly interconnected, and self-regulating system that is itself alive. Ferris is the author of Becoming Earth: How Our Planet Came to Life and a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and Scientific American. He has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper's, National Geographic, and Wired, among other publications. Ferris is the recipient of a Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from UC Berkeley and the MIT Knight Science Journalism Program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
