The Noise Between Us | Olivia Hong | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghai

The TEDx talk, “The Noise Between Us,” explores why it is so difficult to change someone’s mind in today’s world. Drawing from personal stories and real-world examples such as the Me Too movement, she reveals how social media and algorithms trap individuals in “information cocoons”—echo chambers that amplify beliefs and isolate them from different perspectives. By unpacking the confusion, frustration, and division this creates, she emphasises the urgent need to break free from these digital bubbles. Her talk encourages everyone to seek out diverse voices, challenge their assumptions, and rediscover the power of genuine, open conversation. Olivia is a student studying in Shanghai, China. She is a well-rounded student and a passionate public speaker. Awarded the IGCSE scholarship for the upcoming academic year, she is eager to further develop her academic skills and leadership abilities while making meaningful contributions to her school community. Inspired by daily conversations with peers and family, and encouraged by the support of her teachers, Olivia began to notice a recurring theme: the challenge of truly connecting and understanding across differing perspectives. This realisation led to her exploration of “the noise between us” and the impact of information cocoons—a topic she is excited to share on the TEDx stage today. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
