Saving the Planet one Basketball at a Time | Alexander Oliver Lu Scheel | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghai

The speaker highlights the hidden environmental costs of basketballs—50 million are produced annually, with 95% of them discarded due to minor flaws or changing trends. Sharing his own experience and survey data, he reveals a global waste problem. Pollution concerns him, but solutions exist: using balls longer, repairing them, donating, or recycling. By rethinking our habits, we can turn "trash into treasure" and reduce pollution. Alex’s call to action: small changes, such as valuing what we already have, can collectively make a significant impact. Alexander is a primary student in Shanghai, born in China to Swedish and German parents. He loves airplanes, basketball, being outdoors, and finding ways to take care of the planet. Whether he’s fixing a flat basketball, cleaning the ocean or speaking up about pollution, Alexander believes that small actions can make a big difference. In his TEDx talk, he shares a simple story about repair, responsibility, and how anyone - no matter their age - can help protect the world we live in. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
