Echi dal passato: i dinosauri e la crisi climatica | Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza | TEDxPadova
Immaginate di viaggiare indietro nel tempo di mezzo miliardo di anni, fino alle radici della vita pluricellulare, quando gli unici indizi sul clima del nostro pianeta erano custoditi nelle rocce. In questo intervento vi racconterò come abbiamo portato alla luce queste tracce, spostandoci dagli aridi calanchi di roccia rossa dello Utah alle dune sabbiose del deserto del Gobi, in Mongolia. Grazie all’uso di modelli ecologici ed evolutivi all’avanguardia e a decenni di lavoro sul campo con team internazionali, stiamo ricostruendo l’affascinante storia evolutiva della vita in risposta alle pressioni ambientali: fossile dopo fossile, sveliamo le sorprendenti strategie che hanno permesso ai dinosauri e ad altre creature di sopravvivere, o che li hanno condotti all’estinzione, durante i grandi sconvolgimenti climatici del passato. Scoprendo antiche storie di adattamento ed estinzione, possiamo trasformare le lezioni scolpite nella roccia in indicazioni concrete per gli ecosistemi di oggi. Unitevi a me in questo viaggio: decodificheremo i più audaci esperimenti climatici della Terra e scopriremo cosa ci insegnano sulla resilienza, sulla responsabilità e sulle scelte che dobbiamo affrontare in un mondo in rapido riscaldamento. Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza è ricercatore presso l'University College London, Newton International Fellow della Royal Society, Paleontologo dei Vertebrati. Studia i fossili di rettili estinti, per approfondire l’evoluzione, la diversificazione e l’estinzione della vita sulla Terra, in particolare in relazione ai drastici cambiamenti climatici simili a quelli che alimentano l’attuale crisi della biodiversità.
È un paleontologo specializzato nella storia evolutiva dei dinosauri e di altri rettili Mesozoici. Laureato in Scienze Naturali presso l'Università di Catania ha completato magistrale in Biologia Evoluzionistica all'Università di Bologna e un dottorato in Scienze della Terra all'Imperial College London.
Ricercatore al Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Texas, borsista dell’European Research Council presso l’Università di Vigo. Presso la UCL studia l’evoluzione degli animali terrestri Mesozoici.
