Crafting Emotions – How Music Deepens Storytelling in Drama? | Elsa Zhou | TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghai

For their presentation, the Grade 7 students crafted original music to enhance their drama based on Alice in Wonderland. They composed two distinct pieces: one for the "Painting the Roses Red" scene, where a three-beat rhythm symbolised the fluid motion of painting, and another for "The Queen of Hearts" scene, utilising a march-like, strong two-beat structure in a popular song format. By integrating tempo, beat, rhythm, form, melody, and instrumentation, their music not only underscored the emotional tone of each scene but also enriched the overall storytelling. The class performed these compositions live, while the recorded tracks provided a dynamic, immersive background to their dramatic performance. Elsa Zhou is a middle student in Tongxiang, China.
