Beyond The Scoreboard | Heathe Hanlon Billingslea | TEDxGerman European School Singapore Youth

For Heathe Hanlon Billingslea, sports were a lifeline, even when it meant becoming the coach at age ten in a new country. In this passionate talk, Heathe argues that youth sports are not optional leisure activities but an essential milestone that shapes character for life. Drawing on personal experience and research, she goes beyond physical health benefits to show how the court and the field are the greatest classrooms for teaching resilience, confidence, and leadership. This is a powerful message for both young people who are hesitant to play and parents who are unsure about signing them up: giving children the chance to compete is giving them the chance to grow into their strongest, most capable selves. Heathe Hanlon Billingslea is a student at GESS passionate about the importance of sports for youth and mental health. With experience in participating in sports his whole life, across different cultures from the US, to Mexico, across the sea to Bangladesh and now Singapore, they bring unique insights into this idea. His aim at exploring the importance of mental health in sports for the youth, has thus been able to be brought to light at GESS's TEDx Youth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
