He has traveled more than 10,000 kilometers across both polar regions. In 2016, he completed a solo crossing—recognized as the first in the world—connecting the northernmost settlements of Canada and Greenland. In 2018, he became the first Japanese person to reach the South Pole on foot without resupply or support. He is a recipient of the 22nd Naomi Uemura Adventure Award.His book Thinking Legs received the 9th Tadao Umesao Prize for Mountain and Exploration Literature. His co-authored picture book with Nana Inoue, PIHOTEK: Walking with the Wind in the Arctic, was awarded the Grand Prize of the 28th Japan Picture Book Awards and the Chairman’s Prize of the Japan Book Publishers Association at the 56th Book Design and Binding Competition.His other publications include The Arctic Man and Why Don’t You Walk the Arctic?.
