Defining City Identity | Anas Murshid | TEDxBasra

Anas the guide started by asking the audience a thought-provoking question: “What are the outcomes of presenting the equation 2024 - 1604?”According to the book “Pedro Teixeira’s Journey”, from Basra to Aleppo by land, over 420 years ago, Basra was an economic capital even before the Iraqi parliament officially designated it as such.Anas believes the issue lies in Basra’s lost and unknown identity. He argues that a city’s cultural and economic identity is the foundation for its development, construction, and resilience. Basra currently lacks a clear identity as an economic capital, and its formation must start with fundamental elements — the most important of which is the people. He emphasized that identity emerges not from a single person’s behavior but from the collective behavior of a community. This interaction generates customs, culture, and eventually, identity.Anas concluded by saying that Basra has many names, and the most beloved is “Basra is Iraq” — whether this is a reality due to oil presence or simply a slogan, depends on whether Basra’s identity truly reflects Iraq’s economic capital.
