Forgetting Your Parents' Native Language | Allyson Poyker | TEDxCUNY

The TED Talk is an overview of the universal experience of children of immigrants assimilating into American culture, and inadvertently losing proficiency in their parent's native language. This topic was inspired by Allyson's own personal experience with language loss, and its effect on my personal identity, as well as on the family dynamics at home. In discussing this topic, she aims to spread awareness of the psychology of this experience, and to emphasize the importance of acknowledging the effects of overall assimilation on the children of immigrants. Allyson Poyker is currently a Finance Major freshman at Baruch College and the Print Editor of the Baruch Undergraduate Law Journal. She is passionate about speaking her mind and bringing awareness to overlooked and undercovered topics and ideas. She enjoys using writing as a creative outlet to express my personal opinions and beliefs and delve into the topics she finds great interest in. She aspires to channel her interests in finance and law to be able to attend law school and work as an attorney in the corporate legal field. She cares about current political issues, and as Print Editor of the Baruch Undergraduate Law Journal, she wrote an overview of the history of Rent Stabilization in New York City, its impacts on New York City residents, and challenges that have attempted to abrogate Rent Stabilization Law. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
