Never Lose Hope and Never Give Up | 劉強 John Liu | TEDxRenai Road
John Liu’s life, on the surface, seemed like a smooth and successful journey.
A gifted student, he became an engineer at IBM, later joined the FBI, and eventually served as a U.S. diplomatic representative. To the outside world, he appeared to be the very image of success — steady, intelligent, and accomplished. But behind that brilliance was a long and solitary battle.
For years, he endured severe illness and numerous surgeries. His body bears the marks of those operations; his digestive and visual functions have been permanently altered. The everyday routines that once seemed effortless have become tests of endurance and willpower. In his talk, he speaks about “companionship” — a word that, to him, goes far beyond physical presence.
Companionship is an attitude, a form of courage shared between people in times of hardship.
It’s when doctors take risks to treat him at his most fragile moments.
It’s when friends stay by his side, laughing with him even as his vision fades.
It’s when colleagues honor their promises even when he can no longer be there in person.
These, he says, are miraculous forms of companionship.Even when faced with darkness, he chooses to believe that light still exists ahead.
Even when his body is bound by limitations, he continues to act with gratitude and purpose.
Through his experience, John reminds us that companionship and hope are not medical miracles — they are the deepest expressions of humanity. His message is clear:
Hope is not what remains after everything is over —
it is what gives us the strength to keep going.
