A passionate rap enthusiast, Wang You’an believes that music can speak the words we struggle to say. Through his lyrics, he transforms unspoken feelings into songs that belong only to him. In this talk, he shares how rap became his language of honesty, healing, and self-expression. Youan Wang, a 16-year-old eleventh grader at the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, has a profound passion for rap culture. This vibrant art form has fundamentally shaped his journey of self-exploration and expression. What began as writing diss tracks to vent his emotions evolved into crafting verses about freedom and identity. Through rap, he has learned to embrace his authentic self. Now, he shares his story in the hope of illustrating how hip-hop—with its powerful beats and poetic rhymes—guides enthusiasts like him to discover and accept who they truly are. With no working instrument to study, no recordings to guide him, and only fragments of poetry from Sangam literature, Tarun spent a year piecing together clues from ancient texts. His curiosity refused to let him quit & he succeeded in bringing back a sound unlike any Guitar or Veena, a voice from India's forgotten musical past coming alive again. Tarun proves that small curiosities can unbury centuries of silence. His work challenges us to ask: What melodies & wisdom from our own heritage are we ignoring?
