I'm South African | Pillay Cheryl | TEDxKCISEC Youth
"You must be from India, right?"
"Actually… I'm South African."
"South African? But you look Indian!"It's a question I've been asked so many times I've lost count. At dinner tables, airport gates, classrooms, and crowded city sidewalks, especially while living in China. Each time, it opens the door to a fascinating detour through history, one where I explain that my ancestors were part of a wave of indentured laborers who left India between 1860 and 1911, bound for the sugar cane plantations along South Africa's east coast. They came hoping to return home one day, but most stayed, planting roots that would grow into generations, including mine. There are about 1.7 million people of Indian descent in South Africa, yet this vibrant community remains invisible to much of the world. The threads of British colonialism wove India into a global migration map; South Africa is just one stop among many. As a result, I belong to the largest diaspora on the planet, a living, breathing bridge between continents, languages, and legacies. In this ever-turning kaleidoscope of culture, identity, and memory, I navigate the spaces between "Where are you from?" and "Who are you really?" Each question invites a new reflection, another shard of color in the mosaic that shapes who I am and my place in the culture kaleidoscope. Ms. Pillay has been an English teacher for the past 25 years. She hails from South Africa and has been in China for the past 8 years. She is married with one son. - 16:02The Dream of Bringing Vietnamese Culture To The World | Thi Van Hanh Ngo | TEDxThang Long UniversityIn a global context where nations are actively building their national brands and asserting their cultural identities and heritage, Vietnam’s own aspirations are steadily coming to fruition, yielding increasingly visible results. Among the leaders carrying the “big dream” of bringing Vietnamese values to the world is Ngo Thi Van Hanh, CEO of YeaH1 Group.Beginning and persevering with nothing more than a profound belief, the journey of Mrs. Van Hanh and her team is far more than the bright lights that audiences see on stage. To bring cultural values “from heart to heart” across generations, what is the key element? What fuels the conviction that Vietnam can create premium shows—high-quality productions with cultural depth—on par with those from anywhere in the world? In her talk "From Heart to Heart: The Aspiration of Bringing Vietnamese Culture To The World" (Từ trái tim chạm tới trái tim: Giấc mơ đưa văn hoá Việt ra thế giới), the answer lies within the belief held not only by the creators and production team, but also within each audience member—within every Vietnamese individual. Ngo Thi Van Hanh is the Chief Executive Officer of YeaH1 Group, the driving force behind top shows in Vietnam like “Call Me By Fire" (Anh Trai Vuot Ngan Chong Gai), "Sisters Who Make Waves" (Chi Dep Dap Gio Re Song) or “Haha Family" (Gia Dinh Haha). One of her major career milestones was joining YeaH1 in 2023 after more than 24 years of experience at leading media companies. Beyond bringing international formats to Vietnam, Mrs Van Hanh has played a key role in reshaping the perception of “premium shows”, thereby contributing to the growth of the country’s entertainment industry. Her decisive, creative, and strategic leadership has also enabled YeaH1 to foster humanity and sustainable values, affirming the potential and position of Vietnam’s cultural industry in the context of global integration.
