TSENG, YUN BIN | TEDxMingdao HS Youth
Homeschooling — officially known as applying for Individual Experimental Education — is rare. With so few of us compared to the crowds in traditional schools, homeschoolers often seem mysterious and easy to label. I was homeschooled through elementary school, then joined a private junior high later on. At first, I learned alongside my mom, figuring out how to self-study while trying hard to shake off those labels. Then, when I stepped into my dream private school, my dad helped me redefine what being “a homeschooler” could mean. This is the story of me and my label — how we fought, made peace, and now walk forward together. Homeschooling isn’t just a system, it’s a skill; a label isn’t only a stigma, it can be a badge. What I hope listeners take away is this: we all carry labels, but we can choose whether they confine us or become a badge that pushes us forward.
From kindergarten through sixth grade, I was homeschooled, attending a few classes each week at my local elementary school. It wasn’t until my first year of junior high that I began a full-time school life within the formal education system. Now, as a second-year student, I’m working hard to adapt — transitioning from self-directed learning to structured schooling. In the past, I spun on my own axis; now, I’m learning to orbit in harmony with others. - 11:54Born from Grit, Raising with Grace | Simran Rai | TEDxNHVPS YouthStory of a journey standing as a testament to the power of opportunity from Sarvam Shakti foundation, and inner strength. With grit and grace, she shows that girls from underserved communities can rise into confident leaders, given the right support. She reminds us to see them not as charity cases, but as “Shaktis”, bearers of strength, capable of uplifting entire communities. Necessary approvals have been obtained by the foundation. Simran grew up watching her father work long, exhausting days as a daily wage earner. Life around her was chaotic and filled with the pressure of survival, yet her father held one unwavering belief that his daughter deserved a chance to learn and grow beyond what society expected of her. That chance arrived through Sarvam Shakti. There, Simran entered a world of movement, discipline, health, confidence, and expression. Dance, yoga, nutrition, and self-awareness became tools that helped her shed the labels of “marginalised” or “disadvantaged,” and rewrite the story society had written for her. Today, she speaks about the power of opportunity; not charity or sympathy, but true opportunity that sees a girl for who she can become. Simran reminds us that compassion and curiosity exist in every child, regardless of background. All they need is someone to notice, believe, and give that first chance. When they do, girls like Simran don’t just rise; but they shine This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
