The Balance Between Giving and Accepting Help | Silver Wiesler | TEDxSHC Youth

In this talk, Silver Wiesler shares a powerful personal story of losing her home to fire at just eight years old, and the lesson that transformed that tragedy: learning to both give and accept help. Drawing from personal experience, psychology research, and community work through the Fire Journal Project, Silver explores why asking for help feels so difficult, how refusing it can isolate us, and why accepting support is as vital as offering it. Through stories of resilience, community, and healing, this talk highlights the balance we need between giving and receiving help, and how that balance can strengthen our connections and create lasting change. Silver Wiesler is a junior at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco. She co-founded the Fire Journal Project and Fire Forecast, two initiatives focused on fire recovery and prevention. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
