What Your Genes Say About the Air You Breathe | Saanvi Uppalapati | TEDxChantilly HS
What if a simple nasal swab could reveal how pollution is impacting my brain in real time? In this talk, I share how I’ve been exploring the use of RNA data to uncover early signs of bodily inflammation caused by immediate environmental exposure. I’ll take you through my journey of building a tool that combines gene expression with real-time air quality data, helping people understand the hidden health costs of pollution. And I’ll explain why I believe the future of public health might begin at the molecular level and what we, as a society, can do to save ourselves and our planet. Saanvi Uppalapati is a rising high school senior from Virginia with a passion for ethical AI, environmental health, and innovation. She has conducted research on sustainable machine learning, presented at national science fairs and energy conferences, and is currently building tools to connect pollution exposure to brain health using RNA data. Outside of school, she loves baking, playing the flute, and photography, as well as volunteering at nonprofit organizations that motivate young girls to pursue computer science. - 16:44Weaving the fabric of heritage | Disha Shah | TEDxYouth@SunbeamBhagwanpurDisha Shah shares her journey of how she became a part of something big at such a young age. What began as a response to crisis soon grew into a women-led brand that blends tradition with contemporary expression. From reviving her family’s saree legacy to harnessing the power of digital storytelling, she reflects on entrepreneurship, creativity, and resilience — and how uncertain times can spark extraordinary beginnings. In her words, "you have to begin to become big". Disha Shah is the co-founder of Safetyypins, a Banarasi clothing label she launched with my mother, Payal Shah, during the 2020 lockdown. When their family’s wholesale saree business came to a halt due to the pandemic, they turned adversity into opportunity by starting an online brand from home. Rooted in tradition but shaped by a modern voice, Safetyypins quickly grew into a platform that celebrates craftsmanship, creativity, and women-led entrepreneurship.Since then, they've been featured in Vogue India for our Kandhwa Banarasi handloom saris, launched multiple sold-out collections, and built a strong organic Instagram community. They've also connected directly with customers through pop-up events and exhibitions. Safetyypins has become a symbol of how heritage and modern design can coexist — and how powerful things can grow from the most uncertain times.
