P-values: pervasive, problematic, promising? | Jane Monaco | TEDxUNC

If you scratch the surface to get behind the headlines on many of the studies you read in science and health, you find they rely on p-values. This talk focuses on awareness of how p-values can be misinterpreted and offers some alternative solutions. Jane Monaco, is a Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, specializing in biostatistics education. With more than two decades of experience in the classroom, she has been recognized with the McGavran Excellence in Teaching Award, awarded to one SPH faculty member for career contributions to teaching. As Assistant Dean of Undergrad Majors in Gillings School of Global Public Health, she leads in curricular innovation, advising and mentoring. When she is not thinking about p-values, she enjoys time with her family – her husband, three kids, and a poorly-behaved but sweet golden retriever. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
