Community development expert Kuralai Zharkymbayeva offers a fresh perspective on the concept of batyr—a traditional symbol of heroism—arguing that it must be reimagined for the modern world. In her view, today’s hero is someone who contributes to social justice and empowers others to see themselves not as people in need of help, but as equal partners. In this talk, Kuralai outlines four key qualities of the modern hero: recognizing the potential in every individual; creating opportunities for those who receive support to move forward; helping others discover strength within themselves; and respecting each person’s unique path rather than imposing universal measures of success and happiness.“Being a batyr is not only about bravery,” she says. “It is also about having the courage to speak up, make decisions, and change the course of events. The leaders of today are the main characters of tomorrow’s stories—and part of the legacy we leave to future generations.” One should stay away from extremes, especially of ego, followed by other areas of life.Honouring the eternal concept of The Golden Mean by Confucius, he added his humble thoughts of making flexible bands to handle five major areas of life, as we age: health and fitness; relationships; career and finance; personality; and spiritual evolution, ultimately leading to good deeds. He briefly quotes good research works to make the point. He ends on a light note, while reminding to stay away from the blindfolds. An NTSE Scholar and Chemical Engineer from Panjab University.
