Marked Without Feeling: What Tattooing Loses Under Anesthesia | Don Ritson | TEDxWinnipeg
What happens when we try to remove discomfort from a process that’s meant to change us?Tattoo artist Don Ritson explores the growing trend of anesthesia-assisted tattooing—and why it might be missing the point. Through rich personal experience and cultural insight, Don dives into tattooing’s ancient roots and transformative potential, arguing that pain is not a flaw of the process but a feature.Tattooing isn’t just about images on skin. It’s about vulnerability, intention, and surrender. It’s a ritual of becoming—of marking personal change. And when we bypass the discomfort, we risk losing the very lessons tattoos are meant to teach. Don Ritson has spent 18 years perfecting the art of tattooing while contemplating its deeper meaning. For Don, tattoos are amulets of transformation and self-discovery. He reveals how tattooing can be a journey toward embracing identity and change. - 11:54The Courage to be disliked | Nan LIU | TEDxFuxingParkComing from a small county town as a rural teacher, she went on to become a sales champion at a top German company and joined a global talent development program. At the age of 40, she started learning a foreign language and mastered it proficiently within three months. Liu Nan's life is full of amazing stories. Now, as a blogger, she is affectionately called "Internet Mom" by girls. She teaches girls how to get along with others in the workplace and how to wear a shining crown for themselves. LIU Nan has accompanied and nurtured nearly a hundred young talents in the workplace, among whom 20% achieved promotions in their early twenties. As a long-term practitioner and lecturer of growth mindset, she believes that every trial, error, and turning point is an opportunity to expand the boundaries of cognition. In recent years, she has embarked on another path in life as a "new blogger and painter". Her oil paintings have been selected for the "Super Puzzle" Art Festival, and her first solo exhibition The Wrinkle of Time is currently in preparation. She has always pursued spiritual nourishment without clear "titles" — seemingly useless, yet they are the source of creativity. She is not obsessed with role definitions, nor is she eager to label the future. "I don't even know who I will be," is her most sincere answer to self-exploration. On the road of constant evolution, she is willing to take curiosity as a lamp and move towards the unpredictable distance.
