2000年よりカナダ北極圏やグリーンランド、北極海、南極大陸にて主に単独徒歩による冒険を実施。これまで南北両極地を1万キロ以上踏破。2016年にはカナダからグリーンランドそれぞれの最北の集落を繋ぐルートを単独踏破(世界初)、2018年には無補給単独徒歩により南極点に到達(日本人初). 第22回植村直己冒険賞受賞。著書「考える脚」が第9回梅棹忠夫山と探検文学賞受賞。井上奈奈との共著「PIHOTEK 北極を風と歩く」が第28回日本絵本賞大賞、第56回造本装幀コンクールにて日本書籍出版協会理事長賞受賞。著作は他に「北極男」「君はなぜ北極を歩かないのか」など。2021年より神奈川県大和市にて、書店「冒険研究所書店」を営む。 Since 2000, he has undertaken numerous solo expeditions on foot across the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, and Antarctica. He has traveled more than 10,000 kilometers across both polar regions. In 2016, he completed a solo crossing—recognized as the first in the world—connecting the northernmost settlements of Canada and Greenland. In 2018, he became the first Japanese person to reach the South Pole on foot without resupply or support. He is a recipient of the 22nd Naomi Uemura Adventure Award.His book Thinking Legs received the 9th Tadao Umesao Prize for Mountain and Exploration Literature. His co-authored picture book with Nana Inoue, PIHOTEK: Walking with the Wind in the Arctic, was awarded the Grand Prize of the 28th Japan Picture Book Awards and the Chairman’s Prize of the Japan Book Publishers Association at the 56th Book Design and Binding Competition.His other publications include The Arctic Man and Why Don’t You Walk the Arctic?.
