Never Lose Hope and Never Give Up | 劉強 John Liu | TEDxRenai Road
John Liu’s life, on the surface, seemed like a smooth and successful journey.
A gifted student, he became an engineer at IBM, later joined the FBI, and eventually served as a U.S. diplomatic representative. To the outside world, he appeared to be the very image of success — steady, intelligent, and accomplished. But behind that brilliance was a long and solitary battle.
For years, he endured severe illness and numerous surgeries. His body bears the marks of those operations; his digestive and visual functions have been permanently altered. The everyday routines that once seemed effortless have become tests of endurance and willpower. In his talk, he speaks about “companionship” — a word that, to him, goes far beyond physical presence.
Companionship is an attitude, a form of courage shared between people in times of hardship.
It’s when doctors take risks to treat him at his most fragile moments.
It’s when friends stay by his side, laughing with him even as his vision fades.
It’s when colleagues honor their promises even when he can no longer be there in person.
These, he says, are miraculous forms of companionship.Even when faced with darkness, he chooses to believe that light still exists ahead.
Even when his body is bound by limitations, he continues to act with gratitude and purpose.
Through his experience, John reminds us that companionship and hope are not medical miracles — they are the deepest expressions of humanity. His message is clear:
Hope is not what remains after everything is over —
it is what gives us the strength to keep going.

- 13:14Discipline Algorithms to Control Your Focus | Ali Flifli | TEDxUniversity Hassan II of CasablancaIn this talk, Ali Flifli aimed to build a cognitive bridge between the past and the present — between the fast algorithms of Artificial Intelligence and the timeless spiritual “stations” of self-purification.His reflection was inspired by the writings of Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali, who, more than nine centuries ago, outlined profound steps for purifying and disciplining the self. He revisited his ideas through a contemporary lens — one that helps us face the overwhelming flood of digital distractions that define our modern world.Through this approach, he sought to highlight the integration between Islamic sciences and human sciences, showing how the wisdom of our scientific heritage can offer practical tools to strengthen focus and self-discipline in an age ruled by fast algorithms. Ali Flifli is a researcher based at Hassan II University of Casablanca. Currently pursuing a PhD in Islamic Studies, he combines rigorous academic research with active public engagement, bridging the gap between scholarly inquiry and community outreach.
