Why Civic Education is Key to Saving Democracy | Shreya Raman | TEDxSouth Delaware Street Youth
What happens when a generation inherits democracy, but never learns how it works? In this talk, Shreya Raman tackles one of the most overlooked crises in America today: the decline of civic education. Despite being the most connected and outspoken generation in history, young people are graduating without the knowledge or tools to truly participate in government. They care about climate change, racial justice, and human rights, but too often lack the civic roadmap to turn passion into policy. The result is a dangerous gap: a generation engaged with issues, but vulnerable to misinformation, manipulation, and polarization. Through compelling stories, research, and personal experience, Shreya Raman shows how civic education can change that. This talk demonstrates how teaching civics builds habits of voting, advocacy, and accountability that strengthen democracy itself. Civic education is about giving every young person the skills to navigate power, debate respectfully, and create real change. Because democracy doesn’t protect itself. We do. And it all starts in the classroom. Shreya Raman is a junior at BASIS Ahwatukee here in Arizona. In school, she is the captain of Speech and Debate, a member of mock trial, and the President of theater. Outside of school, she is very involved in public policy and civics, and mainly focuses on education policy reform and civic education. Currently, she is a part of many youth initiatives across the state, such as the Governor’s Youth Commission, the Arizona State Board of Education Student Advisory Council, and the Charter School Student Board. On the policy side, she is on the executive board for the Arizona High School Democrats, and has worked at many congressional offices, such as being the social media director for Brandy Reese’s state house campaign, and most recently a community ambassador for Congresswoman Ansari. In the future she hopes to pursue a degree in public policy and international relations, and go to law school for constitutional law. - 8:57Self-Acceptance: The Smile That Never Left Me | Valeria Silva Pinedo | TEDxYouth@TashkentIntlSchoolAt just 16, Valeria faced a life-changing decision: undergo a major chin surgery to improve her health—or live with constant discomfort and self-doubt. What began as a medical journey quickly became a deeper lesson about identity, self-acceptance, and the way we see ourselves in the mirror. Through fear, uncertainty, and even losing her smile, Valeria discovered that the harshest critic wasn’t the outside world, but herself. Her story is a powerful reminder that true beauty and strength come from within—and that self-approval matters more than anyone else’s judgment. Born and raised in Mexico, Valeria is nearing the end of her senior year and looks forward to the next stage. She believes that life can’t be enjoyed if we are set back by our worst fears. In her second TEDxYouth talk, she explores the idea of social constraints, making connections between facial appearance and our biggest setbacks, often connected to self-doubt. Through her own personal journey of overcoming her transformation after a chin-surgery, Valeria reveals how she frequently feared the judgment and opinions of others when in reality she was her harshest critic. Her talk challenges the idea that life can be controlled by fear of being judged because in reality others are too focused on themselves. - 14:35AI, Skynet, and why humans are losing the battle | Sat Singh | TEDxRancho MirageArtificial Intelligence isn’t just disrupting jobs and draining energy—it’s quietly rewiring how we think. There's a hidden danger of Unthinking: the silent surrender of our memory, creativity, and agency to machines. The antidote? Four uniquely human superpowers—nostalgia, gratitude, curiosity, and imagination—that can help us resist and reclaim our minds. Sat Singh believes that in the age of artificial intelligence, our most important work isn't solving technology—it's understanding ourselves. As founder of AICV and publisher of The Pledge for Responsible AI, Sat has created the region's essential "third space" for AI dialogue. A member of the organizing team for the first-ever Palm Springs AI & Creativity Expo and workshop facilitator at Cal State San Bernardino's ERC, he helps brands, cities, universities, and local businesses understand how to integrate AI with their teams, employees, and customers.Through his content, community, and coworking playbooks, Sat challenges the typical AI narrative. Instead of focusing on what AI can do, he focuses on who we become when we work alongside it. Rather than promising quick implementations, he asks better questions: How do we preserve purpose in our work? What makes human creativity irreplaceable?
