The Cure Wasn’t The End, It Was The Beginning | Emily Whitehead & Tom Whitehead | TEDxFargo
When Tom and Emily Whitehead step onto the TEDx stage, they bring more than a story, they bring a revolution in hope, healing, and human resilience. At age five, Emily was a joyful, healthy child. But when she was diagnosed with leukemia, her family was thrust into a battle they never expected. After enduring 22 months of failed chemotherapy and facing the end of all options, Emily became the first pediatric patient in the world to receive CAR-T cell therapy, a groundbreaking, experimental treatment that brought her into remission in just 23 days.
But this talk isn’t about the miracle of the cure alone, it’s about what came after. Together, Tom and Emily recount their journey through isolation, heartbreak, innovation, and ultimately, advocacy. Tom, a journeyman lineman turned nonprofit co-founder, shares the emotional depths of a father who refused to give up. Emily, now a vibrant young woman thriving beyond cancer, speaks with clarity and conviction about reclaiming her voice and finding purpose in the aftermath of survival.
Through their deeply personal narrative, the Whiteheads inspire audiences to believe in the power of science, the necessity of equitable access to advanced therapies, and the unbreakable bond between parent and child. They illuminate why advocacy isn’t just a choice — it’s a calling. Their story reminds us all: when one life is saved, the journey doesn’t end — it ignites a mission to save countless more. Emily- Co-founder of the Emily Whitehead Foundation, patient advocate, University of Pennsylvania college student, 3 time cancer survivor and the first pediatric patient in the world to have her immune system trained to beat her cancer.Tom Whitehead is a keynote speaker, author, and journeyman lineman for an energy company. He is also the proud father of Emily and the co-founder of the Emily Whitehead Foundation, which is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for pediatric cancer immunotherapy research.
Tom, his wife Kari, and their daughter Emily founded the Emily Whitehead Foundation to share their story and support families facing pediatric cancer. At age five, Emily was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia that did not respond to standard treatments. As a last resort, she was enrolled in a groundbreaking clinical trial and became the first pediatric patient in the world to receive CAR T-cell therapy. The treatment was a success—Emily has been cancer-free for over 12 years and is now considered cured. - 11:04Blessed and Burdened at the Top | Alia Jamal | TEDxUAS Kuwait YouthThere are people who without trying to stand out end up being noticed anyway. When someone is titled as an individual who “stands out”, or someone extraordinary, they are no longer allowed to be anything else. Society will always picture these people in a specific way. They mustn't let this stereotype define who they are. Journey with me through ways we must shift our view of these situations, and change the mindset for those who shine towards understanding and accepting that of their humans as well. Alia is a curious and creative student with a passion for discovery, learning, and creating. She has always been drawn to public speaking, finding joy in the opportunity to inspire others through her words. Alia is thrilled to participate in TEDxYouth UAS Kuwait, where she can share her ideas, express her thoughts, and use her voice to motivate and engage her audience. She extends her gratitude to the Universal American School Kuwait for making this experience possible. - 12:31Music is the Home of the Soul | Jana Abou Naga | TEDxUAS Kuwait YouthMusic is the one factor of our lives that has an influence on every human regardless of age, gender, personality, nationality/race, or culture/upbringing. It is an active aspect in the world around us; even nature, a naturally occurring element of life, contains music and is affected by it. It transcends any fake or real borders we have created in our world, and bridges people of vast differences, as we all are able to find a connection to music of any form. Humanity’s common ground lies in music, and it is like the home our souls return to as a way of finding peace and reconnecting with ourselves. We turn to music whenever we feel our bodies need a reset whether we realize it or not. It is ultimately the reset setting of our society. Jana is an Egyptian high school student, who is passionate about science, reading, writing, MUN, piano, and gymnastics. She describes herself as a loud and extroverted people-person and hopes to study medicine, with the goal of helping others. Jana is joining TEDx UAS Kuwait Youth because she feels there is much that goes unspoken. She wants to bring attention to issues that leave gaps in society yet are often ignored. Jana hopes to express her thoughts and emotions on topics both common and overlooked, make a difference, even if minimal and inspire others to find their voices, because if we do not address the problems we’ve created, who will?
