Building Community With Music | Philippine Suzuki Youth Orchestra (PSYO) | TEDxBritishSchoolManila
The Philippines has always been a nation of artists, yet arts education often lags behind. In this inspiring talk and performance, the Philippine Suzuki Youth Orchestra (PSYO) shows how music can bridge that gap, nurture creativity, and build community.Formed in 2019, PSYO brings together young musicians trained in the Suzuki method to play as one orchestra. During the pandemic, the group found new ways to connect through virtual concerts, podcasts, and collaborative projects that grew into a mission to make orchestral music more accessible to Filipino youth.Alongside their story, PSYO performs three powerful works: Ripples by Filipino composer Mary Robyn Bernabe, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, and Vivaldi’s Spring. Through their music and message, the orchestra demonstrates that creativity is not only learned but also lived, and that true artistry thrives in community. The Philippine Suzuki Youth Orchestra (PSYO) is a non-profit organization that aims to promote classical music education and appreciation among children and young adults in the Philippines. Since its formation in 2019, PSYO has grown from a small children’s ensemble to a training string orchestra with a varied repertoire of pieces from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, as well as contemporary favorites.
