The energy of advocacy: Rewriting the future of education | Yazmine Verdieu | TEDxInglewood
Why should a child have to leave their neighborhood to get a quality education? In this powerful and data-driven talk, Yazmine Verdieu, educator and founder of Verdieu Learning Center, exposes the persistent inequities in America’s education system—and how they continue to impact communities like Inglewood. Drawing from her own childhood experience of commuting to schools outside her neighborhood, Yazmine breaks down how funding models, policy gaps, and systemic inequities have turned access to education into a matter of zip code. But she also reveals something more powerful: the energy of advocacy. Through real stories of parents, teachers, and communities who organized, spoke up, and won change from local victories to statewide reform Yazmine shows that advocacy isn’t reserved for politicians. It’s built by everyday people choosing to turn frustration into fuel.Watch this talk to discover how your voice and your energy can help rewrite the future of education for every child. Yazmine Verdieu is an educational advocate, entrepreneur, and researcher dedicated to creating equitable learning opportunities for underserved communities. Born and raised in Venice and West Los Angeles, Yazmine moved to Inglewood at ten years old. It was through running her tutoring business since 2020, Verdieu Learning Center, that she witnessed firsthand the educational disparities that disproportionately affect students in schools across Los Angeles. This experience fueled her passion for advocacy and her continuous commitment to representing educational quality through her services.
Through her research, Yazmine explores how systemic inequities in education impact students' access to resources, opportunities, and long-term success. She believes that education is more than just a system—it is a gateway to empowerment, and every student, regardless of their background, deserves a fair and just opportunity to thrive.
Beyond her work in education, Yazmine is committed to fostering change through policy reform and community engagement. Her dedication to advocacy has placed her in rooms where change is made, from collaborating with local educators to addressing decision-makers on the importance of equitable curriculum design. She has recently earned her master’s degree in education from Pepperdine University and plans to continue her studies, with a strong focus on educational law and its role in shaping more just and equitable policies.
As a TEDxInglewood 2025 speaker, Yazmine aims to ignite conversations about the power of intentional energy in education—how advocacy, passion, and persistence can transform learning environments for students in communities like Inglewood. She believes that by challenging outdated policies and investing in educational equity, we can create a future where every child has the tools and support they need to succeed. She also emphasizes the power of awareness—recognizing the stark differences between schools in high-income versus low-income neighborhoods, from funding and resources to teacher salaries, can serve as a catalyst for motivation and systemic change. By shedding light on these disparities, communities can push for policy reform, demand accountability, and advocate for an education system that uplifts all students, regardless of their zip code.
Yazmine’s journey is a testament to the impact of education, resilience, and the power of using one’s voice to drive meaningful change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

- 17:19Nisi lijen - samo si neusklađen | Sandro Kraljević | TEDxKoprivnicaLibraryLjudi često sebe proglašavaju „lijenima“ kad volja popusti. U praksi je češći uzrok nesklad identiteta i zadataka. Kad posao dugotrajno traži ponašanja suprotna onome tko smo, energija curi, odgađamo i polako gasimo inicijativu. Govor razlaže mehanizam tog raspada: koji signali najranije upućuju na neusklađenost, gdje najviše nastaju mikrocurenja energije i koja jedna granica najčešće vraća koheziju u danu. Poanta nije motivirati, nego precizno imenovati fenomen da bismo ga mogli mijenjati. Sandro Kraljević je psiholog i osnivač tvrtke Mind Lab. - 11:24The Villain | Ngoc Ha Mai | TEDxThang Long UniversityCan a “villain” make the world a better place? With a bold, critical perspective in her talk “Kẻ phản diện” (The Villain), Mai Ngoc Ha offers a compelling interpretation of the “villain” through the lens of scientific theories on human behavior and cognition, uncovering where our judgments and labels originate. Rather than viewing the “villain” as a symbol of evil, she explores the concept as a psychological metaphor for those who dare to face uncomfortable truths, hold firm to their principles, and do what they believe is right—even when doing so isolates them and turns them into the “villain” in the eyes of others. Mai Ngoc Ha is the winner of the TEDx Thang Long University 2025 Student Speaker Contest “The Exceptionals: Out Loud”. A K36 Multimedia Communication student at Thang Long University, she is the runner-up of the ThangLong Debate Tournament 2024 and the creator behind multi-platform channels on YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify, engaging an audience of over 40,000 followers. Beyond public speaking, her creative work was selected as one of the Top 20 pieces showcased at the exhibition “Freedom with the Colors of Emotion.” Ha’s interests lie at the intersection of youth voices, visual storytelling, and media literacy—using debate-honed reasoning and creative production to spark conversations about how young people perceive, express, and navigate emotions in the digital age. - 18:12Career in the Age of Uncertainty | Manh Ha Pham | TEDxThang Long UniversityIn the VUCA era, defined by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity, can a university diploma still serve as your career map? In his talk “Sự nghiệp trong Kỷ nguyên bất định: Kiến tạo la bàn trong thời đại tấm bản đồ không còn ý nghĩa” (Career in the Age of Uncertainty: Crafting Personal Compass When the Map No Longer Applies), Associate Professor Doctor Pham Manh Ha proposes a different orientation: a personal compass. Drawing on his work with students, he highlights three quiet forces reshaping careers - the rise of AI as a partner, the project economy, and the economy of meaning - while hinting at three ways to turn university into the safest laboratory (for capability building, boundary-testing, and value creation) and three strategies to craft that compass (through action, identity, and inquiry). There is no prescriptive formula; only signposts strong enough to help you choose a direction - and take the first step. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Manh Ha has nearly 30 years of experience spanning teaching, research, and academic leadership in occupational psychology, career counseling, and education management. A senior lecturer and policy advisor to the Ministry of Education and Training, he has authored 40+ scholarly articles (including 14 international) and multiple textbooks shaping K–12 career-guidance practice in Vietnam.
