Una abuela, una huerta y un tomate dieron origen a una historia de ciencia con raíces cotidianas. En esta charla, Macarena Barra revela cómo la sabiduría silenciosa de las mujeres, el vínculo con la naturaleza y la perseverancia frente al fracaso la llevaron a fundar un laboratorio biotecnológico en casa, hasta convertirlo en una empresa de base científica-tecnológica. Una reflexión íntima sobre cerrar la brecha entre la ciencia y la vida real, con mirada femenina y con impacto en las personas. Macarena, representa a una nueva generación de científicas que entiende que el impacto de la ciencia ocurre cuando el conocimiento se traduce en soluciones que mejoran la agricultura, la nutrición, la salud y la calidad de vida de las personas. Impulsada por esta convicción, decidió llevar la ciencia más allá de los muros académicos. Desde su hogar, creó un laboratorio de cultivo in vitro donde aplica herramientas biotecnológicas para potenciar la producción de metabolitos secundarios en especies vegetales de alto valor. En 2024, se adjudicó el fondo Semilla Expande para desarrollar un innovador sistema de producción in vitro de Quillay con alto contenido de saponinas, agregando valor y sostenibilidad a este recurso natural endémico. Orgullosa de sus raíces campesinas, reconoce la sabiduría de su abuela como una inspiración fundamental en su camino. Hoy, su trabajo conecta la ciencia, la empresa y el territorio, demostrando que es posible innovar desde lo local con impacto global.
