Il ghiaccio marino dell'Artico aiuta a raffreddare il pianeta riflettendo la luce solare nello spazio. Ma lo stiamo perdendo, rapidamente, a causa del cambiamento climatico. E se potessimo farlo crescere di nuovo?
Una start-up britannica, Real Ice, ha intrapreso un viaggio visionario ma fondato sulla scienza: ispessire il ghiaccio dell’Artico non solo come risposta concreta alla crisi climatica, ma come gesto di cura verso un ecosistema vitale che rischiamo di perdere per sempre.
Questa tecnica, al tempo stesso innovativa e semplice, può rallentare il riscaldamento globale, darci più tempo per decarbonizzare la nostra società, proteggere la biodiversità unica del Nord estremo e sostenere le culture indigene che da secoli custodiscono l’equilibrio di queste terre ghiacciate.
Come funziona? Si pompa acqua di mare sopra al ghiaccio appena formato all'inizio dell'inverno. A contatto con l’aria gelida, questa si congela velocemente, formando uno strato di ghiaccio più spesso, capace di sopravvivere all’estate successiva.
È un’idea visionaria. Qualcuno l’ha definita “folle”, perché richiederebbe di intervenire su milioni di chilometri quadrati. Ma è qui che la tecnologia ci viene in aiuto: automazione, robotica e intelligenza artificiale possono renderla possibile.
Immaginate uno sciame di piccoli robot sottomarini: droni “buoni” che, con una semplice pompa, lavorano silenziosi durante il lungo inverno artico, lontano da tutto e da tutti, per far crescere quel ghiaccio che nei mesi estivi rifletterà enormi quantità di calore nello spazio.
È una chiamata all’azione. Un invito a credere che anche ciò che sembra impossibile – coltivare il freddo – possa diventare una speranza concreta per salvare il pianeta che amiamo. Andrea Ceccolini è un appassionato di tecnologia, innovatore e imprenditore con oltre 35 anni di esperienza in space tech, fintech e climate tech. Cofondatore di ION Group, ne è stato CTO per vent’anni, contribuendo a renderla leader globale nel fintech. Spinto dalla passione per la sostenibilità, si è poi dedicato alla tecnologia climatica ed è oggi CEO di Real Ice, startup britannica che sviluppa soluzioni innovative come l’“ispessimento del ghiaccio” per rifreddare l’Artico, guidando spedizioni e test sul campo.
